Let’s set off on an adventure to discover some of Ghana's most stunning waterfalls.
1. Boti Waterfalls
The Boti Waterfalls is situated in Boti, Yilo Krobo District, in Ghana's Eastern Region. It is a twin waterfall, believed to be male and female. A trip from Accra to the falls takes approximately two hours. A river in the area known as Ponmpon is the source for Boti Falls. According to history, the fall was concealed in the forest until it was discovered by a white Catholic priest. In the promotion of ecotourism, visitors get to experience other sites, including the three-headed palm tree, the umbrella rock, the prayer rock, the tree on the rock, the fertility rock, an ancient cave, and the African map rock. Before experiencing the waterfall, tourists need to descend 250 steps through the thick, green rain forest. Tourists can swim or canoe around the site to get the complete experience.
2. Akaa Waterfalls
The Eastern Region's Akaa Waterfalls is located seven kilometers from Boti Falls, close to the village of Akyeremateng in the Akuapem North District. The Boti River, from which the Boti Falls get their source, also feeds the Akaa Falls. In order to experience the Akaa Falls, you will have to take 250 concrete steps. The falls are surrounded by a pristine rock formation, starting from the entrance all the way to the fall, and are unique and spectacular.
3. Tsenku Waterfalls
Well, if you don’t want to travel outside of Accra to experience nature’s beauty, then Tsenku Falls is the best option for you. Located at Dodowa, Tsenku is a two-level 250 ft. (76 m) waterfall. Known as the only waterfall in Accra, the fall takes its source from the Eastern region, it then joins two other streams, Sanyade and Popotsi before meandering into the sea. The Tsenku Falls are rooted in history as the Dodowa Forest, where it is located, was once the battlefield of the Katamanso War.
4. Wli Waterfalls
If you are looking for the adventure of a lifetime, then Wli Waterfalls is the best choice for you. It is the highest waterfall in Ghana and the tallest in West Africa. What makes this waterfall significant is, the fall has two parts; the upper and lower fall. It is located at Hohoe in the Volta Region. Aside from experiencing the magnificent nature of the fall, tourists get to tour the Agumatsa Wildlife Sanctuary which houses fruit bats, butterflies, birds, monkeys, and baboons.
5. Kintampo Waterfalls
Now let’s leave Accra for a minute and head to the north. The Kintampo Waterfall is located in the Bono East and is one of Ghana’s highest waterfalls with 3 fall stages. A little history lesson: during the colonial era, the falls used to be known as the Sanders Falls when it was discovered in the 18th century. The fall flows from the Pumpum River, a tributary of the Black Volta, which takes its source from the Pumpumatifi. Aside from the waterfalls, tourists get to experience the canopy walk that gives them a better view of the scene.
6. Fuller Waterfalls
Still in the Kintampo area, you will find another beauty, Fuller Falls. This fall is located in the town of Yabraso. The fall is estimated to be 567 ft. (173 m) above sea level and lands gracefully over a series of cascades along the river Oyoko which also is a tributary of the Black Volta. Fuller Falls was discovered by a Filipino missionary, Rev. Fr. Joseph Panabang.
7. Tagbo Falls
Now let’s head back to the Volta Region quickly for this tour. If you love hiking, this one is for you. The Tagbo waterfalls are located near Mt. Afadjato (Highest Mountain in Ghana) at Liati Wote. The waterfalls are a forty-five minute hike from the mountain which takes hikers through the lush rainforest. Travelers get to experience first-hand cocoa and coffee farms. They also get to see some wildlife of different species.
8. Obosomase Waterfalls
The Obosomase Waterfalls can be found at the Akuapem North District of the Eastern Region, a few minutes’ drive from Aburi. Travelers get to experience the falls and its neighboring sites including the Aburi Botanical Gardens, Okomfo Anokye’s shrine and Tetteh Quarshie Cocoa Farms.
9. Adom Waterfalls
Still in the Eastern region, precisely Obosomase, we have the Adom Waterfalls. The river takes its source from the Tsenku Waterfalls. If you want to take a dip in the falls, here is your cue This is because the waterfalls run on stratified rocks into a clear pool. Just like every other falls, the Adom Waterfalls flows through a beautiful rainforest.
10. Ote Waterfalls
On to our final waterfalls, the Ote Waterfalls. It is located in Amedzofe in Ho, Volta Region. It is a forty-five minute hike from Mt. Gemi to the waterfalls. The hike gives tourists the opportunity to see numerous species of exotic flowers, birds and butterflies. The Ote Waterfalls are approximately 262 ft. (80 m) tall and are formed naturally on a canyon rock. The pool created by the rock is ideal for swimming.
