Where to Go in Accra for the Authentic Fufu Experience

By Tawiah Mensah

You are here because you’ve heard and or seen pictures of fufu on social media. I don’t know who or what did the convincing. If it was the soup with the plethora of protein it will cost you a chunk of change, approaching close to GHS 200. This magical, mealy cassava dough is the only food that Ghanaians pay for and still need to help in its final preparation. I mean, you will find people kneeling on the floor with their arms fixed on grinding their own pepper and ginger. Wild, isn’t it? Anyway, you certainly cannot have the full Ghanaian experience if you don’t participate in the Sunday fufu ritual in Ghana. Here are the best places to get the most authentic fufu experience.

Atta Maame Fufu

Atta Maame Fufu is the new fufu hotspot in town, thanks to TikTok. Super easy to find with Google Maps, Atta Maame Fufu is located at Haatso. For the true Ghanaian chop bar experience, where you get to unleash your inner chef by grinding your own pepper and ginger, this is the perfect place for you. Picture yourself eagerly waiting in line with an asanka by your side, waiting your turn for soup of your choice. Weekends are almost always busy here. If you’re determined to avoid long queues, weekday visits would be ideal. The meat here is actually affordable so you can live your protein plethora dreams.

Capo’s Pub

Another TikTok Ghana favorite, Capo’s Pub is easy to find with GPS. It’s about three minutes’ drive from AH Hotel. They are extremely popular for their palm nut soup and fufu. This location is a step above the average chop bar setting with an average pricing where you can enjoy the best fufu with as little as GHS 60.  Let us know what you think when you try it!

Living Room

Just like the name suggests, you can sit in the comfort of your home and order for your authentic fufu experience to be delivered to you or you could go in person to experience the Ghanaian fufu expedition. Because really, what’s fufu without the chop bar setting and vibe? Located in East Legon opposite the East Legon Police Station, Living Room is another Ghanaian favorite with other delicious meal varieties away from fufu so in case you change your mind, you can try other Ghanaian meals as well. They have an Instagram page where you can easily find a contact for delivery.

Aduanipa

As the name suggests, “good food.” This location is priced a little above average, so if you are looking for a premium fufu experience this is the place for you. Although on a weekend, there is hardly parking space in this location. Located in East Legon, directly opposite KFC and Shell fuel station, you will find Aduanipa with their varied menu options: so varied, they sell fried rice. Wild right?

Bush Canteen

By now you should know the concept of business pages is still growing in Ghana. Most of these fufu joints are managed by locals who do not care much for social media. And to be honest, most of the real gems are in hidden locations. There are over five locations with the same name, Bush Canteen. Don’t be bamboozled! The original Bush Canteen is located at Shiashie, about three minutes’ drive from Melcom East Legon Branch.

NukaBite

It's beginning to look like all the fire fufu joints are in East Legon, so here is NukaBite, located in Abelempke to save the day! With a little above average chop bar setting and averagely priced food, if you are looking to enjoy your Sunday fufu in a less crowded environment, NukaBite is the perfect low-key vibe for you. It is less than ten minutes away from Fiesta Royal and less than twenty minutes away from the Accra Mall.

Le Jardin

One key review from this place is how the soup stays hot throughout eating. If you’ve never eaten fufu, cold soup is definitely not how you want your first experience to go. Le Jardin is located at Airport, about two minutes away from Best Western Premier Hotel. It’s on premium real estate with premium pricing, so don’t be shocked.

Fufu is more than just a meal—it's a cultural adventure that immerses you in the vibrant spirit of Ghanaian cuisine. From the humble chop bars to the trendy hotspots discovered through social media, there is a fufu destination for everyone's taste. Cheers to fufu and the unforgettable memories it brings!
