By Tawiah Mensah

Hands up if you are ready for an outside Accra #DettyDecember experience. Everyone agrees that December in Accra mostly covers parties, music concerts, unending traffic, and an influx of foreign nationals from all over the world. If you want a break, you’ve come to the right place! We’ve got the perfect remedy for you to mix up your travels with Accra life and friendly jaunts outside of the city. Ghana is brimming with exciting and unique experiences outside of the capital and we're here to unveil the best spots for you–proper December enjoyment.

1. Sekondi-Takoradi – Where the Carnival Heads Go

If you're a carnival enthusiast, Sekondi-Takoradi should be on top of your list. It takes about 45 minutes to get to Takoradi by flight and it costs between $140- $150. You can also find Takoradi STC buses at Circle at GHS80 (~$7). Takoradi by road is roughly a 3 hour and 30 minute journey. During the Christmas and New Year holidays, the Ankos Festival comes alive with colorful masquerades, music, and lively street dances. And they are blessed with more! Their beaches are beautiful and SUPER CLEAN, yes, I'm subbing Accra beaches. Visit Busua Beach in Takoradi anytime you are there, you’ll definitely go back for more. If you are looking for some culture and history, you also get to explore the Bisa Abrewa Museum, Fort Orange, or witness the vibrant maritime activity at the Takoradi harbor.

2. Volta Region – Serene Bliss and Affordable Paradise

You heard it here first! Volta Region is underrated. Their beaches, their food, their tranquility. There is no better place to go to if you want to get away from the Christmas madness in Accra. My favorite thing is the prices of accommodation there. I'd recommend Meet Me There, located between Dzita and Dzita-Abledomi. It’s not just beautiful rooms, it’s the view for me. For now, you can only go to the Volta Region by road. It is approximately a 2 hour and 30 minute journey. You can travel with the STC buses at Kwame Nkrumah Circle at a rate of GHS90 (~$8).

3. Cape Coast – Elmina: There Are More Than Just Castles!

Cape Coast and Elmina, are known for their historical significance, but they also know how to throw a December party! Traveling to the Central Region is always a great road trip. It takes about 2 hours and 30 minutes to get to Cape Coast. You can travel with the STC buses at Circle at a rate of GHS85 (~$7.50). While many may go here to feel closer to their roots, the real experience kicks off during the New Year with the Edina Bronya Festival. It's an annual harvest festival celebrated by the locals. On New Year's Eve, the Paramount Chief fires shots at midnight to usher in the year with a bang! The next day, the Chief takes a regal ride in a palanquin, presiding over various amazing rituals right in front of the Elmina Castle. Get to experience Ghana through Ghanaians.

4. Kumasi - The Royal Jam

Known as the "Garden City'' of Ghana, Kumasi isn't just lush with greenery but also filled with excitement during December. It takes about 40 minutes to get to Kumasi by flight and it costs between $80- $100. You can also find Kumasi STC buses at Circle between GHS80-90 (~$7.50). Kumasi by road is roughly a 4 hour and 30 minute journey. An essential stop is the Manhyia Palace, the esteemed residence of the Asantehene, which also serves as a museum of Asante Empire history. Accompanied by tour guides, you'll embark on a journey through the Manhyia Palace, delving into the tales of Yaa Asantewaa and Okonfo Anokye. The real party starts after dark. Join the locals at places like Vienna City for some serious dancing, munch on some delicious kebabs, and sip on pito–the local brew. In Kumasi, you can move from location to location and not have to worry about traffic. Conveniently, Uber and Bolt services operate there too, and the prices of items are way more reasonable than in Accra.

5. Ada - River Adventures

Another underrated treasure that gives a unique experience, is Ada. If you are into adventure and you’d love to get out of the noisy Accra, this should be on your go-to list. Ada is only traveled by road. It is about 1 hour and 30 minutes from Accra. You can travel by bus from Tema at GHS85 (~$7.50). Ada is all about water sports and river adventures. From jet skis to boat cruises, and even canoeing–take your pick! And guess what? You can party in a floating bar. It's giving 90’s rich rap music videos. You can visit the Treasure Island in Ada for a day trip or to stay. They have a boat ride, restaurant, horse riding, and quad biking. But look at that pool. If you plan to stay, their rooms range between GHS600-1000 (roughly $55-90).

If you still think Accra is the only place to be, I dare you to step out of your comfort zone this year. If you don’t have a good time, look for me. I’ll pay for all your December balling in Accra next year! Ghana has so much more to offer during the festive season–there's a whole world of enjoyment waiting for you.
