If You Are Out Partying In Ghana, These Nightlife Tips Will Come In Handy

By Jesse Ababio

For any first-time visitor coming to Ghana to experience the famed “Detty December”, it is important to make safety your priority. If you're seeking an exciting nightlife experience in Accra, there are numerous options available. Regardless of whether you prefer clubbing or more relaxed environments, there is a venue to suit your preferences.

1. Always have some cash on you

This tip is very important because it can be very embarrassing when you are done having a good time and you can’t pay for the drinks and the food, not because you don’t have money but because the mobile networks decided to not work properly that very day. If you have some cash on you, it saves you the entire embarrassment. An additional tip to this is to pay from your bank app; ideally, the USSD codes from mobile money transactions might not work, but your bank app might with a quick hotspot or wifi payment.

2. After partying hard, there’s always food in Osu

Osu has saved more lives than you can ever imagine. It’s the town that never sleeps. During the festive sessions, indigenes of Osu make it a point to “cash out” if it means forfeiting their precious sleep. Sometimes finding food after having a good time can be very stressful, but rest assured, you will find food in Osu. From 24hr restaurants to 24hr filling stations to the midnight shawarma joint to your favorite indomie seller, Osu has it all. This tip is very important, so you have to take note of it.

3. Look up the events before you set off

I know your friend told you about that event and gave you all the info you need, but you are doing yourself a great disservice if you don’t look it up yourself. A lot of events are either ticketed or you've got to RSVP. In order to avoid the embarrassment of getting bounced at the entrance, do your due diligence and check out all the important information.

4. Always have a designated Uber driver friend

First off, you will need it, and here’s why. If you are not driving to the event or party and you are relying heavily on ride-hailing apps, then you are in for a ride. There are a lot of reasons why you need to get an “Uber” driver friend who is willing to come pick you up when the party is over. After the event or party is done, the prices from these ride-hailing apps shoot up astronomically, making it even more stressful. Also, instead of meeting different strangers who are going to drive you home, you have one trusted driver to take you home. Remember safety first, as always.

5. Do not leave your drink unattended

This is the most common tip for anyone who enjoys the nightlife. Do not under any circumstances leave your drink unattended; you either go with your drink or you get a new one right when you come back. Even though everyone is out to have a good time, there are some evil people plotting to do unimaginable things.

6. Avoid Ghana Police at all costs

The police are your friend, they say, but for nightlife enthusiasts, they’re just stress. From the time-wasting random searches to “something small for the boys” extortion, you will not want to experience it. If you are holding, *wink*, just avoid the police at all costs. Those guys will drain every penny from you, threatening to take you to jail.

7. Always be prepared to leave for the next hottest place

Right when the party is getting less interesting, it is time to move on to the next one. The night is too young to go home. It is also important to have a list of events you will be attending that night or possibly know the hotspots for the evening. If you love going to clubs, be prepared to club hop.

8. Don't be rude to the bouncers, waiters/waitresses, or the security guy

This tip is very underrated. A lot of people underestimate the importance of being nice to the bouncers, waiter/waitress, or security guy in the parking lot. Be prepared to leave them a tip. For instance, if you are going to be a frequent visitor of the place, being familiar and nice to them gives you an upper hand. The security will reserve the best spots for you to park, the bouncers will not hustle you, and the waiters/waitresses will give you preferential treatment.
